IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM or ITSM) is a centralized, policy-based, enterprise class, data backup and recovery software. The software enables a user to insert objects not only via backup, but also space management and archive tools. It also allows to retrieve the same data via similar restore, recall, and retrieve methods.This product is part of the IBM TotalStorage suite of products and is unrelated to Tivoli Framework. The storage areas, known as pools, can be disk, optical, or tape based media.Along with the basic backup and recovery function, a policy-based hierarchical storage management (HSM) component allows transparent migration from a client device to the ITSM server and vice versa of infrequently accessed data on demand. ITSM also enables LAN-Free and server-free backup in SAN fabric environments. The Disaster Recovery Manager (DRM), when enabled, mitigates the creation of offsite media and server rebuild procedures in case of disaster.
